Udzungwa Mountains National Park makes up, along with Selous Game Reserve, Mikumi National Park and Ruaha National Park, the ‘southern safari circuit’ in Tanzania. It was designated as a national park in 1992 and as such is one of the newest in Tanzania. The park covers an area of 1990 sq km (740 sq miles) with the mountains rising from 250 metres (820 feet) to the highest point, Luhomero Peak at 2,576 metres (8,300 feet).
Udzungwa means the land of the Dzungwa. Dzungwa were a sub group of the Hehe people who were driven from the Iringa area by other Hehe people during the late 19th century.
The mountains are 650 million years old and are covered in rainforest up to 50 metres (165 feet) high. It is a beautiful unspoilt wilderness area which is home to numerous animals and birds. There are a large number of endemic species of plants and animals including the Iringa-Uhehe Red Colobus monkey. The park, is particularly fascinating for bird watchers with over 400 species.
There are no roads in the park, only hiking tracks. The park is excellent for walking, with all hikes being led by a park ranger.
Udzungwa Mountains National Park is an excellent day’s visit for those guests staying 2 or more nights at Vuma Hills Tented Camp in Mikumi National Park. |
